EasyList merges with Fanboy's List

written by MonztA, on May 17, 2013, 7:29:00 AM.

The Easy team is very happy to announce today that both major ad blocking lists, EasyList and Fanboy's List, become one list! Also, EasyPrivacy and Fanboy's Tracking List were merged.

With this change all users will have a consistent Internet browsing experience and will no longer have to bother whether they have to choose EasyList or Fanboy's List or which one of them is better.

Fanboy, who has many years of experience in ad blocking, is a gain for the Easy project and will from now on be the main author. Welcome to the team!

Fanboy's Annoyance List was already included in the EasyList repository some weeks ago. Also, a new filter list solely for blocking social media integration, Fanboy's Social Blocking List, was created and is officially featured on the Adblock Plus features page. It was adapted from the Annoyance List which means you do not need it if you already have Fanboy's Annoyance List.

You do not need to do anything to get the new list(s), everything will be done automatically.

If you encounter any issues, please report them in our forum.

    Comment by DD — May 18, 2013, 8:37:31 AM | # - re

  • No, it was added to the EasyList repository means that also the other EasyList authors have now access to it and can update it. You still have to add it to Adblock Plus manually.

  • I currently have AdblockPlus for Firefox with 4 subscriptions: EasyPrivacy+EasyList as 1, Fanboy's Tracking list, Fanboy's Adblock List and Fanboy's Enhanced Tracking List. Which lists do I need to subscribe to, to have all those and no duplicates?

  • Can we have a little more clarity on the Annoyances list? Mainly, is it sticking around by that name? Or is it destined to merge with Social Blocking List, which looks like a subset of Annoyances right now?

    Comment by Rick — May 27, 2013, 7:37:12 PM | # - re

  • Sure. No, the Annoynce List will stay as well as the Social List. The latter was adapted to have a default list to only block social media integration. If you have the Annoyance List installed, there is absolutely no need for the Social List.

  • Guys, this way Adblock now blocks the regular Google Analytics library (ga.js). I can understand why dc.js is blocked (it enables retargeting ads via Google Analytics), but ga.js is pure anonymous tracking, with a goal of optimising user experience based on aggregated data. Are there any plans of fixing that? Thanks.

  • Could you please report this issue in our forum? forums.lanik.us/viewforum.php?f=64 If you are using Firefox, please submit an issue report with ABP where the Google Analytics file is blocked (see https://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started#false-positives) and also post the issue report link in the forum topic.

  • Hello, thanks for the merge!
It was a great news, only a question.

I have installed these subscriptions in this order:

    1. EasyList
    2. EasyPrivacy
    3. Fanboy's Annoyance List

So, I do not need to install Fanboy lists, right? because they are already included in the Easylist. Second, is Fanboy's Annoyance List merged with EasyPrivacy or not? Third, do we need to install Fanboy Ultimate List at all?

    Regards,
    Nima

    Comment by Nima — Jul 10, 2013, 11:47:35 AM | # - re

  • No, you don't need to.
    No, it's not.
You decide: "includes Main Adblock List, Tracking List, Enhanced Trackers List and Annoyances List" https://fanboy.co.nz/filters.html

    Comment by MonztA — Jul 11, 2013, 9:51:21 AM | # - re

  • Thank you so much for your reply. :)

When I add the Ultimate list, I see this name:
    "Fanboy+Easylist-Merged Ultimate List"
    Is it right?

If it includes the main adblock list, does it mean that it also includes main Fanboy list which is now merged with EasyList? Does it get updated at all?

    Regards,
    Nima

  • I currently have these lists

    easy Privacy
    easy list
    easyprivacy+easy list
    malware domains
    fanboy's social blocking list

    in that order

I want to get easylist plus fanboy's list (combined into one now.) what ever it is called now

I do think I have some redundancy.
Any help here would be appreciated.

  • Hi MontzA.

The default install of Adblock Plus activates the following lists:
    [1] EasyList Dutch+EasyList
    [2] Mailware Domains
    [3] Fanboy's Social Blocking List
    [4] EasyPrivacy

My question is: Is there another Fanboy list, which is adding extra value (protection)?

    For example:
    [A] Fanboy Ultimate Adblock list
    [B] Enhanced Tracking list
    Source: https://fanboy.co.nz/filters.html

    AND/OR:
    [C] Fanboy Adblock List
    [D] Tracking List
    [E] Annoyance Block List
    Source: https://fanboy.co.nz/

Mybe it's an idea to document which list from A-E is included into 1-4, for all other future visitors ? Also what is the relationship between list A-B and C-E? Maybe even compared to 1-4?

So to summaries: which list is obsolete compared to the default Adblock Plus installed lists and which list would you advice to install as an extra layer of protection? At least to me, this is still unclear after reading the newspost and the comments.

Thanks you in advance for your response and even more for making this listst available! :-)

  • Great work and much thanks to all. I rely on Adblock Plus to keep my internets clear of debris.

Now, how about a comprehensive and definitive chart showing which lists contain which other lists, what each one does, and what each is intended for? Even after reading all the comments here, it still hasn't been stated in any clear language, and I'm unable to find any such information on this site. Users are forced to guess.

    • If I want to make use of all these lists, which ones specifically should I subscribe to without creating redundancies? Or, which specific lists do you, the authors, recommend for users wanting to block everything?
    • I'm of course assuming that redundancies could possibly affect performance, and so should be avoided. Is this logical or even a thing to worry about at all? Many of us are so obsessed with performance that we can't not think about it, no matter how small the effect.

A Venn diagram would be great, or maybe an "If you want this... use these..." chart. But please - PLEASE, at least create a dedicated page with absolutely clear, specific, and complete descriptions of each and every list, in one place - ya' know... for dummies. :)

    Thanks!

  • One thing that's unclear is whether or not being subscribed to ...say, Fanboy'sUltimate is more efficient/beneficial than if I was to subscribe to each list (EasyList+EasyPrivacy, Fanboy'sEnhanced, and Fanboy'sAnnoyance) individually. Or if it makes no difference at all. Other than that...

  • "No real difference whether you have it or not? Why was it created in the first place?"

Derrrp. Haha, good point. Stupid question I guess.

The reason I ask, I guess, was I was thinking that maybe the "bundle" was one giant list and might not be updated as quickly or as often, so if one small thing was added to a list, having them added separately would be better. But clearly it doesn't make a difference.
